The Best Tonneau Covers for the Ram 1500: 5 Picks Compared
Hard rolling, hard folding, soft folding and roll-up tonneau covers for the Ram 1500 compared, with real fitment notes for split tailgates and RamBox beds.
An uncovered Ram 1500 bed leaks fuel economy, soaks whatever you haul, and advertises your cargo to everyone in the parking lot. This guide is for Ram owners choosing between the four cover styles that actually matter: hard rolling, hard folding, soft folding, and soft roll-up. We compared the leading option in each format plus a budget alternative, focusing on the fitment traps specific to this truck, the multifunction split tailgate, RamBox beds, and the Classic-versus-new-body split that quietly disqualifies whole product lines. Every pick here was verified against Amazon listings for the 5 ft 7 in bed, the most common Ram 1500 configuration. By the end you will know which cover format fits how you use your bed, which part numbers your trim can and cannot run, and where spending more genuinely buys you something.

Best Overall
BAK Revolver X4s Hard Rolling Tonneau Cover
by BAK
The Revolver X4s is the only cover here that pairs hard-cover security with true full bed access, which makes it the most complete option for a Ram 1500.
What we like
- Rolls all the way to the cab so the entire 5 ft 7 in bed stays usable
- Interlocking aluminum slats resist cutting and support distributed loads
- Rotational locking rails secure the cover along its full length, not just at the tailgate
- Sits nearly flush with the bed rails for a clean, low-profile look
What we don't
- Costs several times more than the soft covers in this guide
- The rolled-up cover sits behind the cab and eats into front bed space when open
- Heavy enough that full removal for tall cargo is a two-person job
| Cover type | Hard rolling |
|---|---|
| Material | Aluminum slats with matte vinyl skin |
| Bed access | Full bed, rolls tight to the cab |

The BAK Revolver X4s takes Best Overall because it refuses the classic tonneau trade-off. Hard folding covers like the BAKFlip MX4 give you security but leave stacked panels blocking part of the bed. Soft roll-ups like the TruXedo TruXport give you full access but can be sliced open in seconds. The X4s rolls its interlocking aluminum slats into a tight spiral at the cab, so you get hard-cover protection and a fully open bed from the same product.
The security story is what separates it. Rotational locking rails grip the cover along its entire length, and with the Ram’s tailgate locked there is no soft corner for a thief to work on. The matte vinyl skin over the slats keeps the look low-profile, and EPDM perimeter seals handle rain well according to the owner feedback we reviewed.
This is a research-based comparison, not a hands-on test. Aggregated owner reviews consistently praise one-person operation and seal quality, with the most common complaints being fiddly first-time installs on trucks with bed liners and the rolled cover taking up front bed space.
The real limitation is price. You are paying roughly three times what the Extang Trifecta 2.0 costs and many times the Tyger T3, and if your bed rarely carries anything valuable, that premium buys capability you will not use. Note also that part 80227 does not fit RamBox-equipped beds, which need the RB version.
Buy the X4s if you want one cover that does everything well and plan to keep the truck for years. Pick the BAKFlip MX4 if you prefer flip-style access, or the Tyger T3 if the budget matters more than the security.
Research-based pick: this recommendation is based on product data, owner feedback and comparison with products we have tested, not on direct hands-on testing.
Buy it if: Ram 1500 owners who park outside, carry gear worth stealing, and still need the whole bed on weekends.
Skip it if: Your truck mostly hauls groceries and you cannot justify a four-figure accessory.
Best Hard Folding
BAKFlip MX4 Hard Folding Tonneau Cover
by BAK
The BAKFlip MX4 delivers most of the security and weather protection of the premium hard covers at a noticeably lower price, with quick flip-open access to the front of the bed.
What we like
- Aluminum panels with a scratch-resistant matte finish shrug off cargo and weather
- Can be driven with the cover fully folded and propped upright against the cab
- Drain tubes route water out of the bed instead of letting it pool at the seals
- No-drill clamp-on install with all hardware included
What we don't
- Does not fit Ram 1500s with the multifunction split tailgate
- Folded panels block roughly the front third of the bed when open
- Panel edges can rattle on washboard roads if the clamps are not snugged periodically
| Cover type | Hard folding |
|---|---|
| Material | Aluminum panels with matte finish |
| Bed access | About two thirds, panels stack near the cab |

The BAKFlip MX4 is the hard folding pick because it hits the sweet spot between protection and price. It shares the aluminum construction and BAK build quality of our Best Overall Revolver X4s, but the folding format brings the cost down meaningfully while keeping thieves and weather out of your bed.
The everyday workflow is what MX4 owners like. Flip the first panel and you can grab a toolbox at the tailgate. Fold the whole cover forward and prop it against the cab and you can haul taller loads without removing anything, something the X4s cannot do without a full takedown. The matte finish also matches the Ram’s factory trim better than glossy fiberglass lids.
The trade-off against the X4s is bed access with the cover in use. Folded panels stack at the front of the bed, so you never get the fully open box that the rolling X4s or the soft TruXport offer. And the big fitment catch for Ram buyers: part 448227 does not work with the multifunction split tailgate, so owners of higher trims need to check their tailgate before ordering, or step up to the RamBox version that supports it.
This is a research-based pick built from listing data and aggregated owner reviews, which run about 4.2 stars across more than a thousand ratings. Recurring complaints are occasional panel rattle and seals that can drip in heavy rain, which the drain tubes mostly manage.
Buy the MX4 if you want hard-cover security with useful partial access. Pick the X4s if full bed access matters more, or the Extang Trifecta 2.0 if you want folding convenience at half the price and can accept vinyl instead of aluminum.
Research-based pick: this recommendation is based on product data, owner feedback and comparison with products we have tested, not on direct hands-on testing.
Buy it if: Owners who want hard-panel security and like flipping open just the section of bed they need.
Skip it if: Your Ram has the multifunction split tailgate or you regularly haul bed-length cargo with the cover on.
Best Soft Folding
Extang Trifecta 2.0 Soft Folding Tonneau Cover
by Extang
The Trifecta 2.0 is the most refined soft cover in this lineup, with a tool-free install, a lifetime warranty, and build quality a clear step above budget tri-folds.
What we like
- Snap-on clamps install in minutes with no tools or drilling
- Heavier leather-grain vinyl and a sturdier aluminum frame than budget tri-folds
- Lifetime limited warranty, the strongest coverage in this guide
- Light enough for one person to remove completely in under a minute
What we don't
- Part 92421 does not fit the multifunction split tailgate
- Vinyl offers no real theft protection against a determined cutter
- Folded cover must be strapped upright, and rear visibility is partially blocked while driving that way
| Cover type | Soft folding |
|---|---|
| Material | Leather-grain vinyl over aluminum frame |
| Bed access | About two thirds, folds toward the cab |
| Install method | Snap-on clamps, tool-free |
| Warranty | Lifetime limited |

The Extang Trifecta 2.0 wins Best Soft Folding because it does everything the budget Tyger T3 does, just better and for longer. The vinyl is heavier, the frame stiffer, the corners better finished, and Extang backs it with a lifetime limited warranty while most soft covers get a year or five. At 4.6 stars across its Amazon ratings, it is also the best-reviewed cover in this guide.
What it solves is the daily-use problem. The snap-on clamps mean the whole cover goes on or comes off in about a minute with no tools, so hauling a dirt bike or a load of mulch never requires wrestling hardware. Owners repeatedly describe the install as the easiest they have done, and the integrated perimeter seals keep normal rain out of the bed.
Its limitation is the same one every soft cover shares: vinyl stops weather and prying eyes, not a box cutter. If you leave tools in the bed overnight in a city driveway, the BAKFlip MX4 or Revolver X4s are the right answer. The Ram-specific catch is fitment: the standard 92421 part skips the multifunction split tailgate, though Extang’s RamBox version supports it.
Compared with the TruXport, you are trading full roll-back bed access for a folding action that opens two thirds of the bed but removes faster. Compared with the T3, you are paying roughly double for better materials and the lifetime warranty.
Buy the Trifecta 2.0 if you want the nicest soft cover experience on a Ram 1500. Pick the T3 to save money, or step up to the MX4 when security starts keeping you up at night.
Research-based pick: this recommendation is based on product data, owner feedback and comparison with products we have tested, not on direct hands-on testing.
Buy it if: Owners who want a clean-looking, weather-resistant cover they can fit and remove alone, without paying hard-cover money.
Skip it if: Theft protection is the main reason you are buying a cover.
Best Soft Roll-Up
TruXedo TruXport Soft Roll Up Tonneau Cover
by TruXedo
The TruXport gives a Ram 1500 full bed access at a soft-cover price, with tension control that keeps the vinyl drum-tight through hot and cold seasons.
What we like
- Rolls completely to the cab so the entire bed opens up in seconds
- Fits Ram 1500s with or without the multifunction split tailgate
- Adjustable tension system keeps the vinyl taut in summer heat and winter cold
- Sits about an inch above the bed rails for a clean factory-style look
What we don't
- Hook-and-loop side seals can let wind-driven rain seep in at the rails
- No rigid panels means zero cut resistance and no load support on top
- Listed fitment stops at 2025 models, so 2026 owners must verify before ordering
| Cover type | Soft roll-up |
|---|---|
| Material | Leather-grain vinyl |
| Bed access | Full bed, rolls to the cab |
| Install method | Clamp-on rails, no drilling |
| Warranty | 5 year limited |
| Install difficulty | Easy |
| Price bracket | $$ |
| Year range | Cab / variant | Fits | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2019-2025 | Ram 1500 new body style, 5 ft 7 in bed | Yes, part 285901 | Works with or without the multifunction split tailgate |
| 2009-2020 | Ram 1500 and 2019-2020 Classic, 5 ft 7 in bed, no RamBox | Different part number | Part 245901 covers the older body style |
Swipe sideways to see the full fitment table.
The TruXedo TruXport is the roll-up pick because it nails the one thing folding covers cannot: instant, complete bed access. Release the tailgate latches, roll the vinyl to the cab, and the whole 5 ft 7 in box is open. The Extang Trifecta 2.0 and Tyger T3 both leave their folded stack sitting over the front third of the bed; the TruXport gets entirely out of the way.
It is also the friendliest pick for modern Ram trims, because part 285901 explicitly supports the multifunction split tailgate that disqualifies the standard BAKFlip MX4 and Extang Trifecta parts. If your Laramie or Limited has the split tailgate, this is the simplest path to a covered bed.
TruXedo’s spring tension control is the detail owners mention most. Vinyl covers go slack in heat and drum-tight in cold; the TruXport’s adjustable tension keeps the top flat and quiet year round instead of flapping at highway speed.
The limitations are inherent to the format. Hook-and-loop side seals shed normal rain but can weep in hard crosswind storms, so do not store cardboard boxes of electronics under it in a hurricane. And like every soft cover, it offers no cut resistance, which is the argument for spending up on the Revolver X4s.
This is a research-based pick from listing data and aggregated reviews, not hands-on testing. Buy the TruXport if you load your bed weekly and want full access with a tidy look. Pick the Trifecta 2.0 if you prefer folding and a lifetime warranty, or a hard cover if security leads your list.
Research-based pick: this recommendation is based on product data, owner feedback and comparison with products we have tested, not on direct hands-on testing.
Buy it if: Owners who open their bed constantly and want the fastest full access short of owning no cover at all.
Skip it if: You need the cover to double as a security layer for expensive gear.
Best Budget
Tyger Auto T3 Soft Tri-Fold Tonneau Cover
by Tyger Auto
The Tyger T3 covers the basics, weather protection, a tidy look, and a no-drill install, for a fraction of what the hard covers in this guide cost.
What we like
- Costs far less than any other cover in this lineup
- 24 oz marine-grade vinyl and aluminum frame are sturdy for the price class
- Clamp-on installation needs no drilling and is manageable alone
- Limited lifetime warranty is unusual at this price
What we don't
- Does not fit 2019-2024 Ram 1500 Classic models despite the similar body
- Horizontal seals shed rain but fine dust and heavy downpours can still get through
- Frame and latches feel less refined than the Extang, with more reports of alignment fiddling
| Cover type | Soft tri-fold |
|---|---|
| Material | 24 oz marine-grade vinyl over aluminum frame |
| Bed access | About two thirds, folds toward the cab |
| Install method | Clamp-on, no drilling |

| 2009-2018 | Ram 1500 and 2019-2025 Classic, 5 ft 7 in bed | Different part number | Tyger part TG-BC1D9018 (T1 roll-up) serves the older body style |
Swipe sideways to see the full fitment table.
The Tyger T3 is the budget pick because it delivers roughly eighty percent of what the Extang Trifecta 2.0 does for about half the money. You get the same basic formula, a soft tri-fold with marine-grade vinyl over an aluminum frame, clamp-on rails, and a limited lifetime warranty that is rare in the budget class.
What it solves is simple: an open Ram bed collects rain, leaves, and attention. The T3 closes it off, drops highway drag slightly, and makes the truck look finished. For owners hauling camping gear, lumber on weekends, and the occasional appliance, that is genuinely all the cover they need.
The compromises show up at the details. Owner feedback describes more fiddling to get the front clamps aligned than with the Extang, and while the horizontal seals handle ordinary rain, dust and hard downpours can find their way to the bed floor. Like the TruXport and Trifecta, the vinyl surface offers no meaningful theft resistance, so anything valuable should ride in the cab or under a hard cover like the BAKFlip MX4.
The fitment trap is the one that catches Ram buyers most: TG-BC3D1044 fits only the 2019-2026 new body style. The Ram 1500 Classic that sold alongside it uses a different bed, so Classic owners need Tyger’s older-body part instead.
This is a research-based pick from listing data and aggregated reviews. Buy the T3 if you want honest weather protection at the lowest price here. Spend up to the Trifecta 2.0 for nicer materials and easier operation, or to the Revolver X4s if the bed carries anything a thief would want.
Research-based pick: this recommendation is based on product data, owner feedback and comparison with products we have tested, not on direct hands-on testing.
Buy it if: Ram owners who want their bed covered and their fuel-station look cleaned up without spending real money.
Skip it if: You drive a Ram 1500 Classic, or you expect a bone-dry bed in every storm.
How we chose#
We started from the four cover formats a Ram 1500 owner realistically chooses between, hard rolling, hard folding, soft folding, and soft roll-up, because the format decides your daily experience more than any brand does. Within each format we compared the market leaders on materials, sealing design, bed access with the cover in use, install method, and warranty, using the manufacturers’ specifications and the fitment stated in each Amazon listing for the 5 ft 7 in bed. We then weighed aggregated owner reviews with particular attention to Ram-specific failure stories: covers ordered for the wrong tailgate, RamBox clamping problems, and seal complaints in rain. We have not installed these covers ourselves, so treat this as a structured research comparison rather than a hands-on test. Where a pick has a known fitment exclusion, we say so in its review rather than leaving it in the fine print.
What to consider before buying#
Your tailgate and bed first. Before comparing covers at all, answer three questions: new body or Classic, multifunction split tailgate or standard, RamBox or plain bed. Each answer can disqualify specific part numbers in this guide, and wrong-fitment returns are the most common complaint thread for every cover here.
Security or just weather. Soft vinyl stops rain and hides cargo but surrenders to a box cutter. If tools or gear sleep in the bed, only the aluminum BAK covers offer real resistance.
How often the bed opens fully. Rolling covers (X4s, TruXport) clear the entire bed; folding covers (MX4, Trifecta, T3) leave a stack over the front third. If you haul bed-length loads weekly, that difference matters more than material.
Removal. Soft covers come off in a minute for hauling season. The hard covers are a two-person lift you will not do on a whim.
Hard versus soft is really a security decision#
The price gap between the Tyger T3 and the Revolver X4s looks dramatic until you frame it correctly: they solve different problems. Every cover in this guide handles rain, sun and prying eyes acceptably. Only the aluminum panels of the X4s and MX4 make the bed genuinely hard to break into, and they add load support on top that vinyl cannot offer. Decide whether you are buying weather protection or theft protection, and most of the price question answers itself.
Fitment traps specific to the Ram 1500#
This truck punishes careless ordering more than most. The Ram 1500 Classic sold alongside the new body style for years and takes entirely different covers. The multifunction split tailgate, standard on many upper trims, is excluded by the stock BAKFlip MX4 and Extang Trifecta parts. RamBox beds need dedicated RB part numbers from every brand. The two picks that dodge most of this are the TruXport, which supports the split tailgate outright, and the X4s, which BAK offers in a RamBox variant. Whatever you buy, match the listing’s stated fitment to your exact configuration before checkout.
Final recommendation#
Most Ram 1500 owners who can afford it should buy the BAK Revolver X4s: it is the only pick that combines hard-cover security with a fully open bed. Choose the BAKFlip MX4 if you prefer folding access and want aluminum protection for somewhat less. Choose the Extang Trifecta 2.0 if you want the best soft cover experience and a lifetime warranty. Choose the TruXedo TruXport if you open the full bed constantly or your trim has the split tailgate. And if the truck just needs its bed closed off this month, the Tyger T3 does the job for the least money of anything here.
Frequently asked questions
Will these covers fit my Ram 1500 with the multifunction split tailgate?
Not all of them. The TruXedo TruXport 285901 and BAK Revolver X4s 80227 work with the split tailgate, but the standard BAKFlip MX4 448227 and Extang Trifecta 2.0 92421 do not. If your truck has the split tailgate, either choose a compatible cover or look for the RamBox part numbers from BAK and Extang, which support it.
Do these covers fit a Ram 1500 Classic?
No, and this is the most common ordering mistake for this truck. The Classic kept the old body and bed after 2019, so it needs different part numbers. Every pick in this guide is for the 2019 and newer new body style with the 5 ft 7 in bed. Classic owners should search the same brands for their 2009-2018 style parts.
What about RamBox beds?
RamBox storage changes the bed rails, so standard covers will not clamp on. BAK and Extang both sell dedicated RamBox versions of the covers here (80227RB and 92424 for the 5 ft 7 in bed). Order the RB part, not the standard one, or you will be boxing it back up.
How long does a soft tonneau cover last compared to a hard one?
Quality soft covers like the TruXport and Trifecta 2.0 typically give five to ten years before the vinyl fades or the seals tire, and both brands back their covers well beyond the budget norm. Aluminum covers like the X4s and MX4 usually outlast the vinyl era entirely; their weak points are seals and latches rather than the panels themselves.
Will a tonneau cover keep my bed completely dry?
No cover here is fully waterproof. Hard covers with perimeter seals and drain tubes come closest, soft roll-ups with hook-and-loop side seals are the most likely to weep in wind-driven rain. Expect all of them to stop the vast majority of water and plan on a bin or tote for anything that must stay bone dry.
Why do prices vary so much between these covers?
You are paying for materials and security. Budget soft covers like the Tyger T3 use lighter vinyl and simpler frames and offer no theft resistance. The midrange Extang and TruXedo buy you better vinyl, better seals and stronger warranties. The aluminum BAK covers cost the most because they add genuine cut resistance and load-bearing panels, which is a different job than just keeping rain off.
